Fostering & Supporting Research in Catholic Theology
Fostering & Supporting Research in Catholic Theology
Welcome to the Maryvale Research Centre, named after the famous nineteenth-century English theologian, philosopher, and teacher, Cardinal St John Henry Newman. We are part of Maryvale Institute, based at Maryvale House in Birmingham, which was Newman’s first home after he became a Catholic and was named by him.
While at Maryvale House, Newman wrote that “from the very first month of my Catholic existence … [I] wished for a Catholic University” and regarded education as “the true enlargement of the mind [giving it] the power of viewing many things at once.” At the Research Centre, we are engaged in realising Newman’s dream in the field of research by creating a platform for academic work and exchange of the highest quality.
As a research centre, our aim is to explore and explain Catholicism and the Catholic cultural tradition and make its insights and achievements known to a wider audience. We aim to achieve this through conferences, publications, a peer reviewed periodical, podcasts, web pages and other media.
We are proud to be associated with a large group of committed scholars, many of whom are also active as research supervisors in our PhD research programme, and teach our Masters and undergraduate students. Our associates come from many different backgrounds, countries and cultures, and together they ensure that the Research Centre is not only a place for high quality academic work, but also for meeting and creating community.
On these webpages you will discover what we do, who we are and what we have to offer. Again, you are most welcome.
Deacon Dr Harry Schnitker, Obl.O.Ss.S., Director.
