The Rights of the Indigenous People in New Spain by Dr Pablo Irizar

Join us online on Wednesday 19th February 2025 at 6.00pm (London time) for the St John Henry Newman Research Centre for Catholic Theology's Online Academic Forum, the latest in a series of occasional, public seminars by Maryvale academics and guest speakers. This time, Dr Pablo Irizar, will be discussing The Rights of the Indigenous People in New Spain.

In this presentation, Dr Irizar discusses the contributions of Bartolome de las Casas and the early Guadalupe accounts to the formal abolition of slavery and the champion of the rights of the indigenous people in New Spain at the turn of the 16th century. This debate was a precursor to the concept of international law and has broader implications for immigration and Catholic Social Teaching.

Pablo Irizar's research currently focuses on the early sources of Christianity in Latin America. He holds a PhD in Church History (KU Leuven) and a PhD in Philosophy of Religion (Catholic University of Paris). He is the Vice President and Chief Academic Officer at Newman Theological College in Edmonton, Alberta. Previously, he held the Kennedy Smith Endowed Chair in Catholic Studies at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. He was awarded the Louvain Studies Theological Research award in 2020.
