Launching in October 2018, the Maryvale/KYRA Certificate in Leadership and Management Skills in Socially-Orientated Organisations (CLMS) is a one year, part-time, distance-learning course offered through a combination of coursebooks and online learning, and supported by four study days.

Who is the programme aimed at?

The CLMS course is aimed at those already involved in (or aiming to be involved in) administration and/or management of socially-orientated organisations, in an employed or voluntary role such as:

  • Within the Catholic Church
  • Other religious organisations
  • Charitable bodies
  • Educational institutions
  • Care homes
  • Health bodies

What are the entry requirements?

Open access.

How long is the programme?

This is a one-year, part-time, distance-learning course.

When is the next enrolment?

The course launches at Maryvale in October 2018.

Programme information (content & structure)

Aims:
  • Define leadership and management and their importance in achieving interaction and effective attainment of objectives;
  • Understand the nature of management and the differences that exist according to level;
  • Describe and contrast typical models of management, leadership and organisation;
  • Appreciate the way in which key management processes are achieved such as planning, organising, staff resource allocation, decision-making, analysis of data and results and control and budgeting;
  • Demonstrate ability to describe key theories of management to achieve, for instance marketing, production (including quality and other technical services), finance and personnel and the way that these are occur in practice in students' own organisations, based on observation and experience;
  • Use reflection and experience through examination of practice.
Structure (6 modules):
  • Module 1 - The fundamentals of leadership, management and organisation
  • Module 2 - Appreciating the importance of finance and financial management
  • Module 3 - Why is law important?
  • Module 4 - Communication and systems of control
  • Module 5 - Regeneration and its potential impact
  • Module 6 - Culture, procedures and facilitating commitment

Assessment

Each module is assessed through the submission of a 1,500 word, project-based assignment.
